Project Introduction

Coleman Construction & Utilities Limited delivered a detailed civil engineering package as part of the upgrade works at Clapham Wastewater Treatment Works, working in close coordination with Principal Contractor Bridges.

The works were carried out within an operational treatment facility, demanding careful sequencing, disciplined site control and close coordination with multiple stakeholders. Despite restricted access and programme pressures driven by regulatory requirements, the project was completed safely, on schedule and to a high standard.

Scope of Works

The civil engineering package delivered by Coleman Construction & Utilities included:

Pipework and Manhole Installation

The project involved the installation of drainage and service infrastructure to support new assets and wider site requirements, including:

These activities were undertaken within confined working areas, requiring precise coordination and robust safety controls.

Ductwork Installation

A site‑wide ducting network was installed using 150mm twin‑wall ducting, with Cubis RapidStak systems utilised to form durable and accessible draw pits across the site.

The installed infrastructure provides long‑term capacity for future electrical and control system installations as part of the wider treatment works upgrade.

Reinforced Concrete Works

Reinforced concrete works formed a key element of the project and included:

Challenges and Solutions

The principal challenges were limited space, restricted access and the need to coordinate activities alongside other trades within a tight programme.

These were successfully managed through detailed sequencing, forward planning of deliveries and close collaboration with Bridges and site stakeholders. The project was delivered with zero incidents, reflecting the effectiveness of the safety planning and site management approach.
