Wastewater Civil Engineering specialist Coleman Construction & Utilities Limited has been awarded and recently commenced a project to install large screens to protect a threatened and rare species of fish found in rivers across the South of England.
The new screens will act as a preventative measure to stop the fish becoming trapped in the raw water system and provide help to protect this endangered species.
The works on the scheme to date have included:
- Installing a temporary water protection system to help minimise the water ingress to the excavation. This was constructed from timber shutters and installed by Coleman Construction & Utilities Limited with the assistance of a specialist dive team.
- Installation of a sheet and frame piled cofferdam. This was installed via a crane with a piling attachment.
- Excavation of the formation including breaking out and stitch drilling of the existing concrete structures.
- Concrete blinding laid to enable removal of the cofferdam frames.
- Rebar installation for the base in preparation for the concrete pour.
This project has been meticulously planned by Coleman Construction & Utilities Limited due to its location and the constricted working environment. This has meant that all equipment and materials have been crane lifted over the existing pumping station, and coordination of specialist plant and contractors such as piling rigs and divers has also been carefully thought through.
